I wanted to recommend two resources for last week’s topic:
1.) I linked this TED talk in the article itself and I’ll link it here, too, because Boroditsky does a great job of explaining linguistic relativity.
2.) The book Braiding Sweetgrass by Kimmerer isn’t about linguistics. But it does have a chapter on language (called the Grammar of Animacy) which beautifully describes why the author’s home language, Potawatomi cannot be translated well into English (how the translation misses the beauty of the language). It’s a great example for understanding linguistic relativity.
